Tear

The background text of Double Dragon has always been somewhat of a talking point about the game, and while the mystery of the MATIN sign remains somewhat unsolved, the other piece of text isn't so hard to crack.

In reality, the sign above the door next to the MATIN garage on Stage 1 does not say ENGLISH TEAR - it is actually ENGLISH TEA R. which means English Tea Room.

There is a space of two pixels between "ENGLISH" and "TEA", whereas the letters inside the words have a one pixel space. This two pixel space is also present between the "A" of TEA and the "R" which means that "TEAR" is not the word being written. The full stop after the "R" suggests a contraction or abbreviation of a larger word.

Since tea rooms are still popular around the world then it stands to reason that the door is an entrance to an English Tea Room -  possibly from when the neighborhood was a little nicer (or possibly a small business owned by Marian).
